You get points based on a few factors.

Catching Pokémon: For every Pokémon you catch, you get points. If you catch a Pokémon you have not yet caught that season, you get a lot more points. If you catch a Pokémon you've caught before, it doesn't give you much. The more rare the Pokémon, the more points you earn.

Gaining EXP by battling: You also get points by winning battles. The amount of points is based on the amount of EXP your Pokémon earn in that battle. So a battle in which you earn 440 EXP will give you a lot less points than a battle in which you get 20000 EXP.

You have to finish in the Top 100 of the season to get VC. The Top 4 get more VC than anyone below.
