You can only be the original trainer of someone else's Pokemon if you got in via promo code from Pokebay, won the auction and opened it. The ??? on the OT happens whenever you put a Pokemon on auction- the Pokemon is removed from your owned Pokemon (probably to prevent hackers or something idk) and the game probably doesn't register the OT when it's in an auction. However, when you do get the Pokemon, the OT and owner is updated to show you as the owner and the previous trainer (if not brought in a promo code otherwise you are displayed as the OT).
